1970年10月14日開始舉辦第1屆，1988年(第19屆)首度由ISO和IEC成員聯合慶祝，1993年(第24屆)開始，國際電信聯盟(ITU)也加入ISO和IEC共同慶祝世界標準日。從1986年(第17屆)的世界標準日開始，大會均賦予每年的世界標準日一項主題，以代表當年的標準化宣傳重點。以下是1986年～2025年，歷年的世界標準日主題：
